The Cumbia Cosmonauts received instant global attention with their debut release 500% Cumbia Mixtape (Scattermusic, 2010), and continue to push ahead as leading innovators of the global Cumbia Digital and Tropical Bass scenes. The production aesthetic of the Melbourne-based Moses Iten (aka Saca La Mois DJ!!) – producing in collaboration with Thomas “Soup” Campbell – is a combination of the infectious Caribbean offbeat rhythm with warm dub bass lines, sweeping synthesizers and driving beats.
Cumbia Cosmonauts live is an explosive experience whether as solo or as a band, and features characteristic Mexican style MCing, digital percussion and improvised solos. In Australia they have performed at most leading festivals and venues, being celebrated as avant-garde artists (NGV, MONA FOMA, Adelaide Festival, Next Wave Festival) whilst equally at home in clubs, popular festivals, community, street and warehouse settings.
Their music has been featured in the soundtrack of Grammy-Award winning Argentine TV drama El Puntero, several advertising campaigns, and a number of underground short films. In 2012 the Berlin-based label Chusma Records signed the Cumbia Cosmonauts to release Tribal Amazonico EP (2012) and their debut album Tropical Bass Station (2013), on which the production duo reaches way beyond the new cumbia movement, with influences from the club sounds of Brazilian Baile Funk, Angolan Kuduro and Mexican Tribal.
They regularly tour Australia and the European summer festival circuit, and recently toured Mexico and New Zealand. Mexico City-based label Cassetteblog released the Cumbia Sampuesana EP (2014) and are about to release Mexico Remixes EP (2015).
